Practical Modern Software Tools in Power Engineering

Registration

Registration for the practical course “Modern Software Tools in Power Engineering” in the summer term 2025 is open for all students in the campus management portal from 24.02.2025 until 23.04.2025.

The number of participants is limited to 12. If necessary, the order of registration determines the possibility of participation. Please address any questions regarding registration by e-mail to: sekretariat∂ieh.kit.edu. The registration status for all on the waiting list will be communicated on 24.04.2025.

The following weekly sessions are scheduled for the practical course:

Mondays (9 dates in total during the lecture period), 2 pm – 6 pm

On these dates, you can work on the tasks in an SCC pool room and ask questions about the three individual courses.

The practical course begins with an introductory event on Monday, 28.04.2025. Further information on the three courses will be given in this event. (Room 011, Building 30.36, 3 pm)

Description

Compared to the primary installation and switching equipment of an electrical energy system, the secondary systems are much smaller but no less important. These systems include everything that is not directly used for energy transmission, in particular information technology systems.

This practical course highlights the IT aspect with several practical experiments from different areas of energy technology.

From the content:

  • Modelling a high-voltage bushing with the finite element program COMSOL:
Mastering electric fields is a prerequisite for the design and safe operation of high-voltage systems. Today, system components that are exposed to high electric field strengths during operation are designed exclusively with numerical support. The expected field distribution can already be influenced during the design phase.Analysing travelling wave effects with the EMT software tools PSCAD™/EMTDC™ and MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Comparison of different transmission line models in electrical grids and the analysis of travelling wave effects with the EMT (electromagnetic transient) software tools PSCAD™/EMTDC™ and MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Load flow calculation in an electrical power grid with PowerFactory:
Simulation programmes such as PowerFactory are used to investigate the expected load on a grid. After graphical grid modelling, load flow calculations as well as various types of short circuits and other faults can be simulated.

Prerequisites:

Participants should be familiar with the contenr of the lecture "Calculation of Energy Grids", "Energy Transmission and Grid Control", and "High Voltage Technology".

The lectures can also be attended in parallel. Basic PC skills are required.
